Materials used: Pencil, charcoal pencil & a blending stump. 

Drawing - Pencil to paper

The materials I used: A simple graphite pencil, an eraser and a black color pencil. I used the black color pencil for the darkest areas. I also used a cotton bud for blending.

I used a genius graphics tablet...btw it sucks!

Step 1:

I start every drawing by first finding and identifying myself with a Focal Point...in this case, it's the right eyebrow....The most important thing is...don't see a face as a face or an eye as an eye...look at them as a shape...and value(The darkness or lightness). Don't let your mind consciously or subconsciously identify eyes, nose, eyebrows, etc. Think of them like shapes and once you place one shape or a part of it down on the paper...start connecting it with the surrounding shapes. I grip the pencil gently and start suggesting these shapes. As you can see in this picture I'm not concerned about the details yet...

Step 2:

This is the second and the last step for this drawing. I use a simple cotton bud to smudge the pencil marks... that is to smooth things out... it's a great blending tool!... and probably my favorite. I don't like using lots of different materials... I want to keep it ' simple and quick'. Now, once you blend the pencil marks...it will become nice and smooth...the idea is to try to make it look foggy and blurry...you also need a nice eraser! A mono eraser works best for me...because it's super thin. Use it like a drawing tool! NOW...repeat! I mean add layers and layers...try to get those values right. It's easy to target the darkest dark(s) first...then identify the lightest lights...and the mid values. Don't poke the paper with the pencil! Everyone does that...use it gently...I hope I'm not missing anything.
